On October 6th, 7th and 8th, NEDA (New Internationalist Left) is organising the Internationalist Camp at Karpaz, Cyprus.
We’ll have 3 days of discussions with participants from local and international collectives.
So far we have confirmed participants from:
TİP (Workers Party of Turkey)
Xekinima – Internationalist Socialist Organisation, Greece
Internationalist Standpoint, an initiative by revolutionary socialists worldwide
Diem25 – Cyprus
YKP – New Cyprus Party
Network for the Housing and the City
Kazma Birak – Μας Σκάβουν τον Λάκκο – Don’t Dig
and more to be announced.
We start on Friday, October 6, at 8pm with an Opening of the Camp, an introduction of the participants, the camp and its history.
On Saturday, October 7 in the morning we are discussing the Climate Catastrophes that we have experienced and how our lives are expendable.
The year that passed we counted one catastrophe after the other – from the earthquake in Turkey, to the fires in Greece, to the earthquake in Morocco and the floods in Greece and Libya to name a few. There are three main reasons for these colossal casualties: the climate crisis, haphazard urbanisation and the dismantling of public services. All three are consequences of capitalism prioritising profit over the needs of living beings.
We will discuss with comrades from Turkey, from Tip (Workers’ Party of Turkey) that participated in the relief movement after the earthquake, comrades from Greece from Xekinima and from northern Cyprus member of the campaign for the persecution of the hotel where 35 cypriot children died during the earthquake in Turkey.
In the evening we are discussing the US-China Competition and where it is leading.
The China-US competition for world domination, reshapes geopolitical alliances internationally, and causes frictions in the relations of the big capitalist blocs. It shows how far the capitalist system and its political representatives are prepared to go: a new era of arms race with serious risks of conflicts that could even include nuclear weapons to defend their economic and geopolitical interests.
We are discussing with members of Internationalist Standpoint, and members of Tip that live in the US.
On Sunday, October 8 will be our last discussion of the camp, about the need and projects for a new anticapitalist Left.
The need for a new anti capitalist left is clear in all of our countries and in the world. In Turkey and Greece there are new attempts and new projects going on, that have contested, or will be contesting the current elections while in Cyprus a new anticapitalist left is in the making.
The new left must be internationalist, feminist, and anti-racist, to fight for climate justice, peace and socialism. It must also be rooted in the working class and social movements. In this discussion we will share the experiences of our countries, and the lessons we draw.
A weekend of political discussion and fun!
During the camp, we will have the opportunity to swim in the majestic beach of Agios Fylonas and visit the peninsula of Apostolos Andreas.
On Friday night, with the help from one of the participants we will stargaze through a telescope.
On Saturday night, participants from all over Cyprus have prepared an internationalist cultural programme, with performances and music.
Home cooked food will be prepared by the camp’s self organised kitchen, and traditional souvla will be served with vegan and vegetarian choices also availiable, while drinks and snacks will be offered in prices adjusted to working people’s incomes.
